Chicken or Egg?

With lockdown I chose to allow myself to embrace the opportunity to switch off rather than zoom in. A conscious decision to see if allowing space and stopping really does allow balance and something extraordinary to happen, as we teach in the Alexander Technique.

Some days it’s a challenge to keep coming back to allowing myself to dwell peacefully and simply be at home to my life in space. Being at ease with one’s self is not always easy, is it?

Isolation seemed like an unbidden yet unique opportunity to deepen into an understanding of ‘I am what I am!’

Yesterday came chicken inspiration – Jinty chicken has been sitting on 5 eggs for the last two weeks. Once a day she eats, drinks and bathes her feathers in the dirt. Other than that she sits alone, serenely on her nest, incubating.

Yesterday it stuck me – isolating and incubating, that’s what I (and many others) have been doing.

And then came a wonderful ‘aha’ moment. What came first, the chicken or the egg? The answer is both! They both co-exist because the important factor for creation and renewal are not simply the chicken or the egg but the right conditions – time, space, patience, trust….

One more week to go and hopefully there will be 5 healthy chicks. She doesn’t know, and neither do I, whether they will hatch and survive. I sincerely hope they do! Her Buddha- like patience and quiet fortitude was my teacher yesterday. A little bit of chicken wisdom that incubation is sometimes necessary if you want to avoid becoming scrambled!
