A Flicker of Light – Playing Horse and Rider

The Magic Stop, Drawing by Kirsten Harris

We were a group of horse women here in Scotland, just starting to play a teaching ‘game’ I call ‘Horse and Rider,’ when one of the participants said, ‘Yes, I can feel a flicker of light.’ I love the expression and I think it is the basis of why I am so passionate when I teach Alexander Technique to horse riders.

When we ride we are communicating our light to our horses – that light is our thinking, transformed into ‘feel’ and a direct line of clear communication that allows our horses to be light, free, forward, balanced under us and with us. We can learn to be thinking riders when we know how. I believe Alexander Technique brings clarity to the how. The flicker of light turns into a clear beam of communication and direction over time.

Experiencing our hands-on communication with the Alexander Technique we can get very much clearer understanding as to what we are actually communicating to our horses. The results are surprising, illuminating and engaging. Riders start to realise the need for clear direction. Wooly vague thought, ego, frustration, trying too hard or asking too much at the wrong time in the wrong way is confusing to the horse who really is listening to what you are thinking right now. You may think you are asking clearly, but are you?

When I teach in this way one person is the horse and the other the rider. The horse now has human words to communicate what is being experienced to the rider.

One woman said ‘I am loving being the horse. I am thinking – oh really, you want me to do that? OK, it’s not going to work, but here you are… ‘ She found the lack of clarity from the rider full of humour. Does this sound familiar? Have you ever felt your horse is making fun of you? Maybe you can stay good humoured as a rider, but maybe you get frustrated or worse. Our lack of awareness can be disastrous for the horse and you too!

Our horses communicate with us all the time but are we really listening to what they are saying?  Maybe your horse isn’t being stubborn or stupid or can’t do it. Maybe he is more than willing and capable but really unsure as to what you are saying.

Honest open feedback is a requirement from players of this ‘game’. It is fun, informative and very surprising when you start to realise the brilliance of your own thinking moment to moment and how loud and clear your thoughts are beaming to your wonderful sensitive intelligent horse.

Why an Alexander Technique Colouring Book?

A few months ago I was speaking to a friend who was suffering from anxiety and suggested she buy a colouring book. It struck me how fabulous it would have been to have been able to give her an Alexander Technique inspired one. An idea was born!

As an artist I know that the act of painting, drawing, colouring … does something really beneficial to the brain. Maybe one switches nervous system (sorry no science here). For sure, the absorption into creativity allows a lot of processing of ‘stuff’ to take place.

So, the idea of The Daily Ease colouring book is to present Alexander Technique in a way that is simple, fun and not too worthy! Weaving ideas into the activity of walking and being in nature seemed a great way to do it.

I also wanted to make something that is a teaching tool for all ages, children included.

A 50 year old male friend read it the other day and said ‘This is making me want to go for a walk!’ As walking is the most heathy total body exercise, inspiring someone to walk more has got to be a good thing.

What people are saying –

‘Within the words and magical illustrations are lots of wonderful reminders of the wisdom and teachings of the Alexander Technique and how they can be so easily incorporated into our daily lives to bring us ease and flow. Kirsten’s book combines her wonderful warmth and humour with her gift for art, her love of nature and her passion for the Alexander Teachings in a way that is accessible for everyone. This is more than a colouring book. It is a delightful, gentle, joyous book of wisdom for all ages.’

Alexander Technique Is Like Harry Potter World!

‘Forward and Up Witch’

Today at school one of the children announced –

‘Alexander Technique is fun! You’re like a teacher from Harry Potter world Miss! Alexander Technique is Magic.’

(Funny how an image of the fuzzy haired bespectacled divination teacher Professor Trelawney, played by Emma Thompson, sprung to mind! And then the flash of a thought that I hope they don’t think I am like Snape!)

But saying Alexander Technique is like Harry Potter world – what can I say – I love my job!

Here are a few more quotes  from 12 – 14 year olds yesterday –

‘We are lucky getting this as you learn life lessons like how to ignore annoying people. When you stop reacting you become kind of invisible and that person stops trying to annoy you!’

‘Alexander Technique is like looking from a different perspective. You see things in a different way. It is like walking into a new room that you have not been in before and you go ‘Wow!’.  It is like the world stops and you can ‘fix’ things, the mistakes, and then carry on in the normal fast world feeling better.’

‘School is stressful. Alexander Technique helps me destress by being more aware of myself.’

‘Pressure builds up in a school day. Alexander Technique is like taking the plug out and everything returns to normal.’

‘When you are in the zone you can let your mind be free and new ideas come easily. You forget about things that are worrying you.’

‘Alexander Technique is like a soother for a sore throat – in that it relieves pains and tensions.’

Magic quotes from magic kids!

Parents –  there are a host of wonderful magical Alexander Technique teachers worldwide! Maybe your children will think Alexander Technique is like Harry Potter world too!
